Apr 19, 2010 A RAM slot or what is sometimes called an expansion slot is a rectangular slot that is built into the motherboard. A RAM slot is used to place expansion cards in it, such as RAM cards to increase. Gold recovery from ram is a very important part of computer recycling. Every E-waste refiner wants to recycle it because it has a good quantity of gold, palladium, and silver. Ram’s recycling is not very complicated. RAM is one of the most essential parts of your desktop computer, and it’s also one of the quickest and easiest parts to upgrade. Modern RAM modules are incredibly simple to use, so it’s rare that something goes wrong in installationbut then when something does go wrong, it gets frustrating quickly. If your computer or operating system doesn’t recognize the RAM you’re using, here’s. While virtual memory from your HDD is much slower than RAM it is sometimes required when running applications that are memory intensive. Performing a general clean up that involves cleaning out temporary internet files, temporary windows files and programs no longer in use is the best way to free up space quickly without having to purchase.

As with any circuit board component, the gold contacts at the bottom of your desktop or laptop computer’s RAM modules must be clean and free of debris in order to maintain a solid connection. If your RAM sticks are dirty, your computer might not recognize that they’re installed and may sometimes show a blue screen. Normally, dusting out the inside of your company’s computers on a monthly basis (more if the environment is unusually dusty) is sufficient to keep RAM modules clean, but if the need arises you can also clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol.
Desktop Computers
1.Shut down the computer and unplug its power cable.
2.
Hold in the power button for a few seconds to discharge any remaining electricity.
3.Remove the side panel from your computer case. The panel may be held in place by a latch at the top of the case or by a few thumb screws or Phillips screws at the back.
4.Lay the computer on its side on a desk or table with the opening facing upward and ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface on the case. If you have an anti-static wrist strap, attach the strap to your right wrist (or left, if you’re left-handed), and connect the alligator clip at the other end to the computer case.
5.Press down the holding clips on either side of the RAM bay holding the stick you want to clean. The RAM bays are located near the processor and you may have between two to eight of them, depending on your computer. Once the holding clips are released, the RAM should eject.
6.Blow off any loose dust or debris from the RAM using canned air. Hold the module by its edges (lengthwise).

8.Set the RAM module aside and allow it to dry completely. Repeat Steps 5 -7 for any additional sticks you’d like to clean.
9.Blow out the empty RAM bay with canned air. While you’re at it, you might also want to dust the entire case out at the same time.
10.Replace the RAM sticks in their bays after you're sure they're dry. Make sure you line up the notches correctly. Apply firm and even downward pressure to each side of the module until it snaps into place.
11.Remove the wrist strap if applicable, replace the side panel, plug the power cable back in and power on the computer.
Laptop Computers
1.Power down your laptop, remove the power cable and take out the battery. Usually, the battery is held in place by a sliding latch at the bottom of the case.
2.Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal object. If you decide to use an anti-static wrist strap, attach the alligator clip to the unpainted metal surface and attach the strap to the wrist on your dominant hand.
3.Press and hold the power button for a few seconds to discharge residual power.
4.Lay the laptop upside-down on a desk or table and locate the RAM bay door. Usually the door is labeled as such, or it may have a RAM stick icon printed on it.
5.Remove the Phillips screw(s) holding the door in place and remove the door.
6.Use two fingers to push out the two latches holding the RAM stick in place. The RAM should pop upward at a 45-degree angle.
7.
Carefully slide the RAM from its slot at a 45-degree angle, holding the module by its edges.
8.Clean the module using a cotton swab or soft cloth slightly moistened with rubbing alcohol and set it aside to dry completely.
9.Repeat Steps 6-8 if you’d like to clean the second module, which is usually located directly below the first.
10.Replace the RAM stick after it's dry by inserting it into its slot at a 45-degree angle and pushing it down until it snaps into place. Make sure you fill the bay on the bottom before the one on the top.
11.Replace the RAM cover and its screw(s), and remove the anti-static strap if you used one.
12.Reinstall the battery and power the laptop back on.
Things Needed
- Anti-static wrist strap (highly recommended)
- Phillips screwdriver
Warnings
- If your environment is overly prone to electrostatic build-up (cold and dry environments, for example), you should strongly consider using an anti-static strap because RAM modules are easily damaged by static electricity.
- When replacing RAM sticks in a desktop, make sure you press straight down. Any sideways motion can damage the module. Likewise, install laptop RAM at a 45-degree angle, and only push down when the module is fully seated.
- Some sources advocate cleaning RAM contacts with a pencil eraser, but the acids and chemicals in the eraser can damage the contacts, as can the shavings from the eraser.
- If you remove the RAM door and discover only one RAM module, the second may be housed under the keyboard or on the motherboard itself. Your laptop’s user manual will tell you where the second bay is located. However, because it’s very easy to damage laptop keyboards and the plastic housing on the machine, consider having someone knowledgable remove the module for you, especially if the RAM bay is on the motherboard itself.

Lenovo's ThinkPad P52 is a mobile workstation available with impressive performance hardware designed for design and development software. It's a thick laptop with plenty of room for upgrades, and Lenovo made the process for adding RAM, M.2 PCIe solid-state drives (SSD), and a 2.5-inch drive as easy as possible thanks to a quick-access panel on the back of the laptop. If you want to add more RAM to your ThinkPad P52, we have everything you need right here.
Hardware to get the job done
- Compatible SODIMM RAM: Crucial DDR4 (From $27 at Amazon)
- Error-correcting code (ECC) RAM: Lenovo DDR4 (From $70 at B&H)
- Prevent damage: Rosewill anti-static wristband ($6 at Amazon)
- All required tools: ORIA PC toolkit ($33 at Amazon)
- Mobile workstation: Lenovo ThinkPad P52 (From $1,349 at Lenovo)
How to upgrade the RAM in your Lenovo ThinkPad P52
Note: Before beginning any upgrades on a PC, it's a good idea to back up your data in the unlikely event something should go wrong. You'll also want to ensure you're not working in a static-filled environment, as it can cause damage to a PC's internal hardware. Consider investing in an anti-static wristband to avoid unnecessary damage.
The Lenovo ThinkPad P52 has a total of four SODIMM RAM slots, though only two — which are likely sitting unused if you didn't select at checkout any more than 16GB — are easily accessible through the quick-access panel on the back of the laptop. The other two slots are located between the keyboard and the rest of the chassis. To get to them, you must remove the keyboard and TrackPoint system and disconnect a whole lot of sensitive connectors. It's not an easy process at all, but in most cases, you'll only be adding RAM instead of removing RAM, which is what we focus on here.
The ThinkPad P52 is available with either an Intel Xeon E-2176M, an Intel Core i7-8750H, or an Intel Core i7-8850H vPro processor (CPU), and depending on which you go with, factory RAM options differ. Models with the Xeon CPU are available with error-correcting code (ECC) memory — RAM with an extra chip that corrects mistakes to prevent data corruption — and if you indeed have a model that already contains ECC memory, your best bet is to only add more ECC memory. Lenovo's own ThinkPad ECC DDR4 RAM is what we recommend. You'll pay more for ECC memory, but mixing ECC and non-ECC RAM is not recommended.
If you have one of the Intel Core CPUs in your machine or you have a Xeon configuration without ECC RAM already installed, you can stick with standard SODIMM DDR4 RAM. We recommend Crucial RAM for its competitive price and resilience.
Once you have the upgrade RAM in-hand, back up your data, set up a clean and well-lit workspace, and proceed with the steps below to upgrade the RAM in your ThinkPad P52. Be sure to power off your laptop — you can even remove the modular battery — before removing the back panel.
- Unscrew the six fasteners on the quick-access panel using a Philips-head screwdriver. The screws can't be removed completely to ensure none are lost.
- Lift up the access panel with a thumb or pry tool. Notice there's a notch along the edge to easily get it up.
- Pull up the plastic shield to reveal the first RAM slot. Do not completely remove the plastic shield. The dark knight rises online.
- Insert the first RAM module at an angle. Notice that it is keyed and will only fit one way.
- Press down on the RAM module until it clicks into place. Notice the two small arms on either side that slide over the edges to secure the module.
- Pull up the plastic shield on the second RAM slot. Do not remove the plastic shield.
- Insert the second RAM module at an angle. It is also keyed and will only fit one way.
- Press down on the RAM module until it clicks into place.
- Replace the access panel, lining up the fasteners with the silver holes.
- Screw in the six fasteners attached to the access panel.
You can now power on your ThinkPad P52 and verify that the RAM you've installed is recognized by your system.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Click System.
You should now be able to see the total amount of installed RAM in the Device specifications section. As long as it matches the total amount you have installed, your upgrade was a success.
